Surgery Preparation

Everything Possible that you may want to consider prior to Surgery!

First small bit of wisdom I have learned is stop and breathe and approach this situation with a clear mind. Nothing good comes from operating out of frantic stress. Sit down have a cup of tea and start a list of everything you may think you will need before and after the surgery.

Here is my list I am compiling prior to surgery - Now I am sure that once this is all said and done I will have many more bits of knowledge gleaned from the experience itself.

1/ Exercise - strength is key. The stronger your leg and core muscles are the better you will be able to support yourself.

2/ Healthy Diet - this one is pretty common. A healthy body heals faster. Try and incorporate foods that are work as anti-inflammatories, decrease constipation, and promote health before and after your surgery.

3/ Raised Toilet Seat  - (I know it is embarrassing) but would you rather be stuck on the toilet and have to call a family member or friend to come pick you up - that would be much worse then buying the funny toilet seat

4/ Grabber - you will not be bending down to pick anything up for at least a few weeks. A grabber will be very handy for the moments when you do not have a caretaker within calling distance.

5/ Shower Seat - even the little things will be exhausting at first. Consider buying a shower chair so you can sit and enjoy getting clean without the stress of falling or  becoming too tired.

6/ Mattress Topper - memory foam mattress's are amazing and super comfy

7/ Zip up sweater - chances are for a while you will not be raising your arms above your head to put on a pull over sweater. Buy some zip up ones that are really easy to put on. In addition, comfy sweatpants are a must. These pieces of clothing will make it a lot easier to dress yourself.

8/ Slippers - Socks will not be an option as you will have little to no way of getting down to your feet to put them on. Slip on slippers will keep your toes nice and toasty.

9/ Video games, books, knitting, etc... you will need to keep your self occupied during recovery. There will be a lot of time spent in bed. Dive into a new series or become a pro at Mario kart. Whatever it is, find a hobby which will bring you joy.

10/  French Braids - Ladies if you have long hair tie it back! the last thing you want is your hair in your face or matted into knots. I went and got my hair put into cute little french braids which I believe are both adorable and perfectly practical for this moment.
